Age-associated cognitive decline is a persistent problem affecting the sufferer and their families. Currently, available pharmaceutical treatments are limited to pathological conditions such as vascular dementia and only provide modest benefits, often accompanied by undesirable adverse effects. Acupuncture is a safe and cost-effective therapy that has been used to improve health and well-being, including brain and neurological functions.
Numerous neuroimaging studies suggest that acupuncture can activate cognitive-related neural structures and improve cognitive deficits in pathological cohorts.
While this effect is relatively healthy cohorts were not clear, numerous mechanism studies suggest a possibility that acupuncture has modest effects on protecting the brain and potentiate prevention. In this workshop, Dr. Sun will be providing an overview of how cognitive declines occur in a neuroscience scope and how acupuncture provides an effect against the debilitation of these functions from an evidence-based approach.

Yu-Ting Sun is Australia's national registered Chinese medicine practitioner. Yu-Ting is currently the lecturer and academic program advisor, and research supervisor for the Chinese medicine program at Western Sydney University. At the university, Yu-Ting's role is to facilitate course development and quality control, teach, conduct research, supervise research students and promote educational awareness of integrative health. Yu-Ting completed her PhD at NICM Health Research Institute (WSU), and her research expertise is on integrative health with a particular focus on neurocognition and cerebro-cardiovascular disease prevention and management using Chinese medicine. Yu-Ting has over 16 years of clinical experience and is dedicated to Chinese Medicine development in both clinical and research fields. Yu-Ting has over ten years of teaching and academic experience and has taught internationally as a guest lecturer, including at Hong Kong Poly-Tech University, New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine and professional associations. Yu-Ting has a particular vision in integrative health, and her goal is to facilitate understanding between medical science and Chinese medicine. She was appointed as a professional panel member for the NSW Chinese medicine council and an Examination Committee member for the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia. Yu-Ting has published several peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and association journals and has also been involved in publication review and editing.
